Sorry about the lack of pictures on the blog. Here are a few from our trip to Zoo Atlanta today! YAY! Charlie worked from "home" this afternoon, and we decided to surprise the kiddos and take them to the zoo (we became members this summer during an "educators" day... yay for homeschooling!)... and it was the perfect day to be at the zoo! Only about 15 other people thought of the zoo today, and the weather was just right for the animals to be super spunky and spry! We got to see baboons fight, and orangutan swing around, elephants eat their leaves, and lions play. To end our trip, the momma tiger and her 2 cubs put on a close up show (kid you not... the momma tiger's ear was pressed to one side of the glass and lucy's hand was pressed against the other side... we told her that it may never happen again in her life!). As I said before, we had gone to the zoo this summer, but the Georgia heat had the animals either hiding in the shade or sleeping... not to mention the throngs of people! Oh, and the momma tiger had recently birthed two cubs, and she was still keeping them pretty well hidden... no doing that these days! Hope you enjoy the pictures... we sure enjoyed the experience!

First Trimester Nesting Without the Nausea

My first trimesters stink. It's almost as if the positive pregnancy test makes me nauseated and it doesn't go away for 3 solid months. 3 times this has been tried and 3 times this has been found to be true. But this time is different {for oh so many reasons, but stick with me!}.

Nesting is something I usually don't do until late in my second trimester {if you know me, you know the procrastinating I can do}, continuing through the beginning of my third trimester and then one last stint for a couple of hours before baby is born {no kidding... again, 3 times this has been found to be true!}. So, I'm having first trimester nesting this time. Hope I don't get third trimester nausea!

I won't bore the blog with too many ramblings of this adoption-momma's story, but I just got to thinking about baby names and how, even though I can eat whatever the rest of the family is eating right now, we get to pick out names for this little one {or ones!}, and as soon as we can decide, we can start using it! Then, Kate won't have to say "when we adopt a baby..."

Oh.

Speaking of adoption and Kate.

Story.

Yesterday, Kate and I were doing our homeschool thing. Sam, Caroline and Drew were napping and Lucy was in her room having quiet time. Kate looked at me and said, "So, will you adopt me? I mean... Am I going to be (up) for adoption?" And it was the sweetest, most innocent asking ever. That we might give her up and have to adopt her again?! And in a heart-half-broken mommy response I mustered, "No baby, you are mine. God gave you to me and I'm keeping you. You won't ever be adopted {except by the Lord}. You'll always be mine." And if there is a way to have that smile on my wall, that is the one I want. She reached over her desk and gave me the biggest hug ever, followed by a great big exhale and a "that was the biggest hug I could ever give you" said with real joy. Not happiness about a new toy. Heartfelt joy. If I could bottle moments with Jim Croce, I would have loved that one. She is figuring this adoption thing out for herself {I "can't wait" to hear how grown-up Kate remembers this part of her life!}

and so far she doesn't have to be put up for adoption, and she thinks we should fly in a plane instead of trying to drive in a car. Whew!

Our Family is Growing

So, if you know Charlie and I, you know that the news of our family growing isn't exactly "big." In six years of marriage, we have 3 babies and, well, Sam is 16 months after all...

But, I'm not pregnant! (can I get a HALLELUJAH?!)

We are adopting!

And we are SO excited.

Adding to our family through the miracle of adoption is something that Charlie and I have been in cahoots to do since before we were married. And, we've been waiting on the Lord's timing. Afterall, adoption is hard enough! We're finally there. And we are SO excited. For the past two weeks I've been nesting. And it has been wacky. That usually happens right before the baby gets here... as in hours before Kate was born!

There you have it... that's our news! So, if you talk to Kate and she says, "I think we should probably take a plane to get our new babies..." you'll know why! {Funny kid... she think's it's her idea that we take a plane and not a car to pick up her newest sibling! This discovery she made after asking if we could drive a car to Africa! Guess it's time for a little Social Studies in the classroom!}

Please do pray for us. I'm sure we'll need it. But, please, please, please pray for our newest little(s). We know that the Lord is with them, even though we are not... but this momma and daddy can't wait to hold them in our arms!

Kate just went to the playroom, in search of her The Body Book. (It's a made up book... no sense searching on Amazon...) When she re-emerged, she said, (and I quote)
"Get vanilla ice cream, and put Hershey's syrup on it and sprinkles. And a cherry on top. But if your parents say you can't have the toppings, but just the cherry (because it's healthy) that's fine. Or if you can just have vanilla ice cream. It's called Tummy Spectacular."
And, when I asked what it was for, she said, "It's for my tummy ache."

I can't believe we haven't posted since before Christmas... but, then again, once I think about everything we've been doing, it's easy to see! Here's hoping you've had a great and the-good-kind-of-busy Christmas season!

One of the things we got to do this Christmas was have a fun photo shoot for the kids. Most of you know, but we live pretty close to one particular sibling and his family... so, within our house, my children are 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Out in the yard or anytime the family is together, though, they become 1st, 2nd and 4th. 3rd and 5th are spots filled by precious niece and nephew! (And, if you're trying to follow and want a bigger challenge... 4th actually has a 6-day "twin"!) So, Charlie's mom had the talented Lindsey Hansen come over and snap our kiddos in action!

Anywho... we have some pictures of the whole crew. Quite a treasure! So, now I'll share. Enjoy! Forgive the repeats from the Christmas card!

I follow because she used to make precious jewelry (mom and Boppa Dee can attest...) as Poppy Lane... she was creatively fundraising for their first adoption. {"She" is Lauren Casper, btw...} And, well, she's a fun and creative momma, so I check in on her blog every now and again! So now they're working on adoption no. 2, and she's at it again... creatively fundraising to bring that baby home! She has a new plan, and you need to check it out. Again, it's here!

We were so ready for Thanksgiving this year! Just the repreive from our normal weekly schedule was exciting, and then we got to add a visit with the whole Henry side of the family in, too! Yay!

Hope your Thanksgiving was a great little break... full of love and hugs.

And, I just can't help myself. This picture says so much that I just had to include it... in all of it's blurry and bad-picture-taking glory. The back story is that on Friday we all loaded up and went to Starkville to have lunch with my dad. We were a party of 12. While at lunch, Sam was cranky. No surprise lately as he's been working on 3 molars simultaneously. So after he ate, we let him down to wander a little, and lo and behold Charlie ended up making a trip to the car for a clean diaper... you get the drift. The change ended up including not only a diaper, but also all of Sam's clothes as well as Charlie's shirt. No kidding. Maybe this is commonplace for others, but it was our first rendezvous with such a disaster in 5+ years of parenting. Even at home. So this picture was taken post "changing experience" when said grumpster was feeling a good bit more spry! Daddy, on the other hand, was not!.

Funny Sweet Story

"Mom, since I'm going to be a dentist and a nurse when I grow up, can I have that All About Me* book? 'Cause I don't know what to do, and it'll tell me what to do. Do you think I should work at the dentist that we go to... me and Lucy and Sam? (I said "Yeah... that sounds good!") Okay. Well. I'll need you to take me. You'll have to drive me because I won't have a car. And I don't know where to go."

Oh the sweet heart of a 5 year old who thinks she'll be a dentist and a nurse when she grows up... and she'll do it all without knowing how to drive or the way to go! This momma loves thinking she'll live close to me... I'm just not sure how excited to be thinking that I'll have to drive her wherever she needs to go!

* All About Me is one of the Childcraft Encyclopedias that we have from my mom... they were ours when I was a child and Kate will spend untold time flipping through the pages! I highly recommend them!

"Sally" is a project that Lucy and I worked on this weekend. Kate was away at the cabin with Mimi and Pop, and Charlie and Sam were so into football... and all Lucy wants to do these days is PAINT! So, here she is... It was a super fun project to do together. But I have to say that she wasn't MY idea... I completely (well, mostly) copied an owl that I've seen around town that is made by Glory Haus. So, credit should be given where credit is due. And while we're at it, I didn't name her Sally... Lucy did. I'm not sure where it came from, but right now, Lucy LOVES the name Sally!

Back to These Days

These days we are busy. {Usually, Charlie and I run through the week's events and commitments on Sunday evening... typically, our next free/uncommitted night is the next Friday.} So, when my mother-in-law offered to take me with her to Key Biscayne, Florida for 4 days, Charlie stepped in a made it happen. It was such a wonderful retreat that I don't have any pictures. Check that. I have 2. The sunrise the first morning and my feet with proof they were in the sand. Both on my phone. No real camera pictures. Amazing.

And then, today, I took the kids to visit Cathy (aforementioned M-in-L) before she heads back out on another adventure and Kate was grilling her about her broken rib. It happened a while back, but a Kate never forgets... and Kate wanted to know if Mimi had to go to the hospital and generally picked Cathy's brain about broken bones altogether. Then, she said this... {I'm not paraphrasing or rewording... this is a quote.} "You sure know a lot for being so old!" I was shocked and rolling in laughter all at the same time. Kate and Cathy have a lot of "old" conversation, so it wasn't entirely a surprise, but she completely caught me off guard! Ahhh!

If I ever email those camera pictures to myself, I'll post them so that there's some color associated with this blog. But that's a big "if!"

Charlie is a coach!

I'm sure it doesn't surprise you. He's been practicing for this since he was 7.

He has taken on the role of Flag Football Coordinator at Kate's school. No, it doesn't actually involve any of our children, but he is having a blast {well... we all are!} and we might as well work the kinks out now...before Sam is on the field!

And, not only do the kids love to blow the new Coach whistle, they love to call him Coach {and, of course, tell everyone that we cross paths with that their daddy is a coach!}!

For the past two years, Lucy has gone with me to take Kate to ballet. She would sneak a glance through the window in the door as often as my arms were free, and always, always, always ask if she could go in today...

Monday was Lucy's first ballet class. With her brand new, ballerina pink leotard, tights, shoes and tutu and with her hair pulled back in little flip-through pig-tails she fit the part just right! It was nothing less than a life-long dream come true for her!

Yeah...

We usually see May coming and hold on tight.

This summer, though, we were holding on for dear life through July. It was a blast, but it was a marathon {note: I've never run a marathon!}!

We travelled for the Fourth.

Then we were home a wee bit until kate had her first week of day camp. And she loved it! We sent her to the same camp charlie went to growing up. The ONLY downside to the whole experience was that 8 hours a day at camp DID NOT wear the child out. The first night she was bouncing off the walls until 1030. goo.

Then, after a week of day camp, we headed back to the beach (same place we went in june) so that I could attend a week of teacher training on the Carden curriculum... something I hope to use for homeschooling!

Now we're home and Kate has finished her first week of Kindergarten. whew.

(i mean, DUH!) BUT SHE SAID, "no, mom, he flew up here by himself and i just picked him up! he was already up here!" when i pressed for details (i know, you're thinking what?) she assured me that he had flown up there by himself and THEN she picked him up. promise. that was the story. sorry no pictures. promise some soon. winter break

so, our first winter break was a week of school cancelled courtesy of snow.
our second was a lot more fun!
the kiddos and i took a trip to baton rouge to visit boppa dee, luke, and rocky! we picked up kaki half way there, and dropped her off half way home. we got to see some of luke's family, and drove over to nola for a day to meet our newest little friend, lillian. enjoy the footage.

yesterday was Valentine's Day...
of course!
we knew that!

really, though, we had a low key day. then, charlie came home early!
so, we headed to the mountain...

we love the mountain.
kate can be a little crazy and climb on things, pick up sticks as tall as she is to hike like mimi and pop (until i tell her to put them down... which really just frees up her hands to find another!) and collect neat stuff (only KATE finds it necessary to taste the sweet gum balls, despite their prickly character!). lucy can mosey and meader... quietly taking in the little-ness of herself in the middle of so many great big trees while safely holding tight to her daddy's hand. until, that is, a train blows by somewhere not-too-far-away, and she pipes up, "oh... oh... you hear dat?" lucy hears everything.
this was only sam's second trip to the mountain. we can only imagine how he will love it as well!

strep throat

this girl has a case of it. yuck.her only symptom? an ear ache.

and she wanted chicken noodle {dora} soup for breakfast.
to me, that's a symptom of being sick.
at least we can still play outside...
i wonder if we can soak up some vitamin d through heavy winter coats!

i didn't even realize how boring clean concrete is (sounds strange, but really) until yesterday, when ours got a facelift. yesterday was gorgeous. so gorgeous, in fact (and slightly to your chagrin!), that i didn't have time to take pictures. there were neighbors to visit, walks to be taken, mini-slag hills to climb across, and, apparently, concrete to be colored. (okay, yes, there was also football to be watched and some ah-mazing white chocolate, amaretto cheese ball goodness {courtesy of one particular "insey"} to be partaken of!) but, i digress.
if the day is warm, my girls are coloring outside. (if it's cold, they are coloring inside... even though their daddy doesn't like all the paper that the artwork requires!) it seems like just when there's only one random bit of sidewalk chalk to be found, another entire box shows up. i'm going to be honest, i don't have a clue where our latest came from. thanks, though, to whoever provided it. our driveway looks great, doodled all pink and purple and green and blue and Rapunzel-ed.
so, even though today isn't as sunny or as warm, there's art on the driveway once again... a sure sign that warmer days are bound to be just around the corner!

and, since a post almost isn't worth posting without pictures, here are a few... recent, but random.

sam started rice cereal last night. YAY!

i know this may seem obvious, but he's my third "start" on food. it's my third time doing this. and, the first two times, the babies were one month more developed {read: older}. why tell you that? because sam ate like he's been doing it for years.
that boy LOVED some food. ate all of it, and was ready for more. {he didn't get it, but he was ready... gnawing on the spoon gave that one away!}p.s. when i asked charlie if he had, in fact, been feeding sam,
he fessed up...
"yep... brownies (charlie's favorite)!"
no wonder!

so, we're on day 4 of snowed-in. thank heaven for next-door cousins and chili-loving grandparents, without whom we would be a lot crazier!
charlie, though, has been able to go to work (thanks to those same chili-loving grandparents!), and, well, i just don't like to be cold. since snow is cold (especially the kind that keeps you stuck for 4 days!), we made a snowman inside. added perk: ours was edible and tasty!

abut a week ago (maybe a little more!), we got a surprise visit from our sweet sweet *friend* harper. really, she's more like a sister of mine (i remember the day she came home from the hospital...), but we aren't technically related in any way!
she was stuck in atlanta on her way back to new york... thanks to snow... like what we're about to experience ourselves!
